Kendall Patrick is an outspoken young singer/songwriter from Ladysmith BC who brings the energy of her music and the passion of her convictions to media awareness presentations for youth. In our media-saturated culture youth are barraged with messages about how they should look, dress, act, and think. Kendall teaches media awareness to those at most risk of falling prey to it. Kendall encourages youth to pay attention to what they’re
being fed by the media and use critical thinking skills when faced with pressure whether it’s from outside forces or
inside, from peer groups.
The Operation Empowerment Interactive Youth Assembly combines music, visuals, and beat poetry. Kendall has a
unique ability to connect with youth on their own terms and in their own language. Frank discussions give students
a chance to share their own experience and reexamine their own lives through a new lense. Students come away with a better understanding of themselves, their peers, and the media that surrounds them. Teachers gain insight into students in their care.
Praise for Operation Empowerment:
“She was refreshing and dynamic, and kept the attention of the audience throughout her presentation. She gave a familiar topic a new perspective and credibility with middle school students.” Jan Johnston, SD72
“She engaged her entire audience (which is very difficult to do with grade 8s and 9s) with her message of waking up to corporate brainwashing, the falseness of the messages we are inundated with in the media and how it is up to each and every one of us to not get sucked in to the popular culture wasteland… She has such an incredibly dynamic way to present such serious subject matter.” Tara Jordan, Campbell River Multicultural & Immigrant Services Association
